Tackling up for ZanderTackling up for Zander Experienced Zander Anglers have supplied information that we hope will help you tackle up for Zander properly RODS For the majoirty of Zander Fishing, such as shallow drains, Canals, Small Stillwaters, Fishing Close in say up to 50 yards out, you could use a minimum of a 12ft 2.25lb or 12ft 2.5lb through action rod, that extra soft action for playing the fish under the tip, there is nothing worst than having that BIG UN come off at the last minute, due to your rods being a little too stiff. For the rest of your Zander Fishing where you are likely to encounter some form of current and depth, such as the Fens Relief Channel, Middle Level, Great Ouse River, plus the Mighty Severn, Trent, Thames and the Larger Stillwaters where distance casting maybe an issue. Then its the turn of the Big Boys - 12ft 2.75lb up to 12ft 3.0lb. These type of rods in through action again for playing fish close in.Fox, Shimano, TFG, Wychwood, Daiwa and JRC all supply good quality rods and they all start from a reasonable £40 up to an impressive £200 each for all you tackle tarts out there. All rods regardless of cost will land that monster fish. REELS and LINES Just how far are you planning on casting, plus will there be some strong currents to deal with, this will all depend on what type of reel you decide to buy..? Are there snags, reed beds, lily pads, underwater features, casting problems, distance casting..?To be quite honest any reel that can easily handle 200yards of 15lb line would be sufficant for most situations, but for the extreame a reel with some form of Free Spool System (Baitrunner), loaded with 300yards of 15lb or 30lb Braid. The Braid to be used for cutting through plant stems, plus superb casting qualities.I use Shimano GTE 8000 reels, you get 2 spools. One is filled with 30lb TFG Braid, the other with 15lb Daiwa Sensor Line. I fish the braid in the snags and the line in the open. What Else..? Bite Alarms, bivvies, carrying your gear, end tackle, keeping warm A decent bite alarm that will work through all weather conditions, such as FOX MICRONS, DELKIMS, TFG and PRO LOGIC DIGITAL, WYCHWOOD DIGITAL.Throughout the summer and autumn months many zander anglers use brollies with storm sides on, easy access and when its boiling hot you don't need to be stuck inside a bivvy, and its still quite warm til september. Here are some good makes FOX OVAL PLUS, JRC STEALTH BROLLEY, CHUB REFLEX, DAIWA MISSION these are all OK til the winds start to pick up and rain comes lashing down, then a stronger form of protection is required. Keeping dry and warm in the rain and chilly weather requires a bivvy of some kind. I have been using a Kevin Nash Titan for the past 12 years, I'm on my 3rd one. But nearly everybody else I see has a Pram Hood Design Bivvy, they are very strong and come with an extra overwrap to keep the warmth in. Nash Combat, TFG, Trakker, JRC STi and Defender are just a few brands.Sleeping bags for the winter nights, a decent 3 to 4 season is required when temperatures drop to -10, Thermal clothing, Waterproof boots, Bedchairs, these all make your stay warmer and more confortable. If you intend on walking long distance, and you have to carry lots of gear, then I would recommend a carp trolley with a single wheel on, easier to steer. Plus either strong rope or strong bungee straps. If your Planning on Cooking, you have a Coleman Sportster Stove that runs on unleaded fuel, or the gas powered single gas hob sold in argos for around £20. I prefer the Coleman, it boils a kettle in like 2 mins. A head torch with 3 or 5 LED set up, can be picked up in Argos for around £7. A few of us who fish the fenland drains have invested on a set of walkie talkies, a pair of 5km range and 10 channels in argos for about £20, my mates have the same set up and we can tune into the same channels, its cheaper than mobile phones, a good over night charge lasts about 48 hours. At least a 36 inch landing net with a long handle, a good size comfortable rucksack, and rod holdall or quiver, extendable bank sticks, JR butt grips (good for holding in the wind), 10/12inch forceps and wire cutters, Strong hooks Fox X2 or Eagle Claw X2 Trebles, or VB Doubles. Middy Tec Core wire trace for Live baits when allowed, Fox Easy Twist or Drennan 7 strand Wire Trace 20lb or 28lb for deadbaits, just remember where there are Zander, pike also Live and either fish can take the bait. Berkley swivels and link swivels, beads, leger stops, JR or Fox Bait Savers are a god send, leger weights up to 3oz, Fox Trace Blades, Fox or ET paternoster floats, Set of Scales up to 40lb at least (for pike), Weight Sling, Unhooking Mat, Live bait Pump and a Camera to photograph your catch. The list is endless - but this is the most popular fishing equipment of many an experienced Zander Angler. Tight Lines to you all. Main Menu This website was created using MAGIX Website Maker.
